We visited New Zealand in 2001, and were blown away by the beauty of the land, as well as the friendliness of the people.
After arriving by air in Auckland, our hosts suggested a side trip to the South Island. We signed up for a tour and were happy that we did. The tour provided hotels and all travel connections. We were on our own for sightseeing and entertainment.
At the end of the tour, we decided to rent a car, and after visiting the South Island, we took the ferry to Wellington, the capitol city of New Zealand.
The ferry trip across was made MUCH more comfortable, as we paid a little extra and were in the 'Club Class Lounge'. Hint: no children! Even better, a Kiwi took pity on us, and loaned us her cell phone, so we could call a hotel in Wellington that she recommended. We had a very comfortable stay, due to the kindness of a stranger!
