We visited New Zealand in 2001, and were blown away by the beauty of the land, as well as the friendliness of the people.

After arriving by air in Auckland, our hosts suggested a side trip to the South Island. We signed up for a tour and were happy that we did. The tour provided hotels and all travel connections. We were on our own for sightseeing and entertainment.

The tour ended with a bus trip back to Christchurch from the West Coast. After the bus trip, rather than fly back to Auckland, we opted to rent a car and see more of the South Island. After seeing the Marlborough area, we "hopped" over to the North Island and continued to drive a rental car.

The thermal areas in and near Rotorua are quite remarkable and we spent a couple of days enjoying them.
