Views of TranzAlpine Express from Our 2001 Trip to New Zealand

We visited New Zealand in 2001, and were blown away by the beauty of the land, as well as the friendliness of the people.

After arriving by air in Auckland, our hosts suggested a side trip to the South Island. We signed up for a tour and were happy that we did. The tour provided hotels and all travel connections. We were on our own for sightseeing and entertainment.

The tour started with us flying in to Christchurch, and then we took the famous train "TranzAlpine Express" over the mountains to the West Coast of the South Island. The tour ended with a bus trip back to Christchurch from the West Coast. After the bus trip, rather than fly back to Auckland, we opted to rent a car and see more of the South Island.

We also enjoyed the sights of Christchurch during our stay. Note that a major earthquake devastated Christchurch in 2011, destroying many of the beautiful buildings we had seen in 2001. (During a revisit in 2018, we saw just how massive the destruction had been.)
